Flying Report 25/2/15

We got more than it said on the tin on Wednesday. We had a great day again with just about wall to wall sunshine which was much better than expected.

It certainly felt like the first day of spring and for a couple of hours we did not need our coats as it was really warm. By 12 noon it was starting to pop with a couple of thermic flights of 14 and 16mins, soon after it was excellent with good thermals to about 2500′ and over quite a large area. We had several flights of over half an hour with the only reason to land being to give other members a chance to experience the best day of the year so far.

By 2-15pm the best of the thermals were over but we had a great 2 hours flying and carried on flying until 5pm when we had the last flight of the day with just a few drops of light drizzle on the canopy, perfect timing.

A great day with no problems, lets hope it is the sign of many more to come. Allan put in an appearance which was good to see and I can confirm he has not lost any of his skills !

We had all 5 gliders out and they were all kept pretty busy all day. Many thanks to everyone who helped make it a very good day.

Total Launches……………….36

Longest Flight……………….41 min. All those who had long flights landed to give others a chance so no prises for longest flight but well done to Alan B., Bob C. and Steve C., who all worked really hard to have excellent long flights.

Total Flight Time…………….6 hr. 54 min.

Steve P.

Editors note: Special thanks to Steve C for the air to air photo!

Flying Report 17/2/15

We had a really great day today with the weather behaving itself all day. We got exactly what it said on the tin. A good westerly breeze of about 10 – 15 kts. gave us really good launches to around 1700′. The sun shone all day and we had an excellent turnout. We were a little late starting with the first flight at 10-30am but flew all day and took lunch in shifts to keep all 4 gliders in the air, our last flight was at 17-10, we made the best of the day.

It was thermic with the best flight at 2pm in the Junior. They managed 23mins with nearly a 1000′ gain in height. There was lots of lift about but it was weak and difficult to centre in.

So probably the best day of the year so far with the longest flight of the year. It was quite cold on the field but was nice and warm in the gliders, winch and bus.

Many thanks to Tony P. and to Nick J. who worked all day to make the day such a success and help to get such a high launch total. But also thanks to all the members who did all the unsung jobs without which we could not fly. No complaints even when it was getting late and even colder.

Total Launches…………………48

Total Flight Time………………6 hrs. 36 mins.

Longest Flight(s)………………23 min. Well done to Tony M. but also well done to Vic (glad your back) A. and Alan B. who both managed 14mins in difficult conditions.

Average Flight Time…………….8 mins. but that does include lots of cable breaks (Thanks Tony).

A great day, why can’t it be like this every week ?

Flying Report 15/4/14

The best day of the year by far today. Warm sunshine, a good easterly giving excellent launches, thermals from the first flight until the last (at 6pm ! ) going all the way to 5000′. A stonking day.

There were loads of really good flights and I am sure they could all have been longer but as there were a lot of people on the flying list everyone came down after a reasonable time so others could have a go. A few notable flights were…..

50mins. By John H. He has been away for over 5 months and did really well, flying like it was only last week he last flew.
24 mins by Ben S. right at the end of the day, a good solo flight and a brilliant hangar landing to finish it off.
27mins. by John G. in the K21. First flight of the day in very weak lift in a glider he has only flown a couple of times before.
60mins. by Phil Pa. and Nick J. in the T21.

Statistics are…..

Total Launches……………..36.

Longest Flight……………….1hr. 6mins. Well done to Phil Pi. and Chris B. closely followed by Tony M. at 1hr. 2min. (see above).

Total flight time……………..15hr. 7mins.

Average Flight Time………..25mins. !!!

A really good day with Hot Cross Buns for a change as it is Easter, thanks to Pete M. for toasting that lot and putting the butter on. Best day of the week and certainly the best day of the year so far. Thanks to everyone who helped set up and stay to the end and do all the jobs needed to keep us flying.

And finally can someone sell Alan D. a sun hat next time he comes to fly, looks like you could fry eggs on his head. Yes the sun is very strong at this time of year.

Flying Report 9/4/14

It was a shame we had to change days at short notice but it really was well worth it. We had a really good day with strong thermals for most of the day, the field had dried out very well after Monday’s heavy rain apart from a few soft spots. George and I managed to find one of them on the retrieve from the far end after a S.C.B.

There were plenty of excellent flights almost from the first launch and it only went flat after 3-30pm. It was warm and sunny as well, the only downside was a cloudbase of about 3000′ for most of the day. We had a good turnout with 18 names on the flying list before the briefing. We had 5 gliders out and they were all kept busy for most of the day.

The grass is starting to grow as well, a good sign things are warming up.

Total Launches…………….32.

Total Flight Time…………..10hrs. 05mins.

Longest Flight……………… 1hr. 07min. Well done to Pete M. and Phil Pa. Allan and Howard also managed 1hr 05min and Tony M. did his usual hour. There were lots of other flights of half an hour or so.

Average Flight Time………..18min. Excellent as we did several cable breaks as well.

A really good day and everyone had a good time with good flights, the Swallows are back so it’s wing bag time gain. Spring is really here.

Steve P.

P.S. Apologies to Bob and Sharon for the change of day (the weather has no respect) and to Phil C. who missed Mondays email.

Flying Report 1/4/14

Today turned out to be a really good day after a slow start. The day started with light drizzle and low cloud and things did not look promising. The one good thing was that the wind was very light and variable and so we were able to set up outside the clubhouse.

At around 11-45 a nice blue hole appeared in the cloud and we launched to find the cloudbase, it was 1100` and rising rapidly, it was also thermic although very weak.

After that we did not look back and flew until nearly 6pm. The thermals did stay weak but it was very warm and sunny and I think everyone had a good day. A few congratulations are in order, well done to John G. for re-soloing after a long break, especially satisfying as John had been coming down for the last few weeks and been unable to fly for various reasons. Well done to George the Poet for insisting on doing cable breaks on a very difficult day and coping extremely well with everything I threw at him and finally I had the privilege of flying with Phil P. who had not flown since last October ! I can assure everyone he has not lost one jot of his skill, of course he also had the longest flight of the day, surprise, surprise.

So onto the statistics,

Total Launches…………..40.

Total Flight Time………….4hrs. 51mins. (Lots of simulated cable breaks in there as well).

Longest Flight…………….21mins. (As above, well done to Phil but closely followed by David S. in the K18 with 20mins and Geoff G. and Roger H. in the T21.).

Average Flight Time………7min. (Would have been a lot more but for the cable breaks.)

Thanks to everyone who came and stayed even though it looked very grim early on and apologies to Bob H. for the weather not clearing up soon enough for him to fly.

See you soon, Steve P.

Flying Report 4/3/14

Tuesday’s Doughnut Day went very well with a good turn out and excellent flying conditions. It was not too cold with a gentle westerly breeze all day, plenty of sunshine and good thermals to cloud base for some. It was thermic as soon as we started flying around 11am and just got better as time went on. By 12noon we were getting to cloudbase at 2400′ .

First Cumulus

It did cloud over for an hour and a half soon after which it cut off the lift but it did clear and was thermic for the next 2 hours, it was a nice afternoon and it stayed dry all day.

We had set a maximum time for each flight of 30mins at the briefing and several people easily managed this, with several others getting close. It was a very good day and after another good day last Saturday and the previous Wednesday lets hope this is a sign of things to come.

Total Launches……………….35. ( Single cable all day and a cable break, this is good going.)

Longest Flight……………….30mins. Well done to Neil Cr. (he has had very few flights so far and this was his second long flight.) Chris B. and Phil Pa. all managed 30mins. Allan and Rob C. also had good flights but not quite the 30mins. A certain person (often seen on the bus) gave up his turn in the K18 as he thought it would not be worth the effort, he will be pleased to know that the person who took his place had a great flight and easily managed his allotted time.

Total Flight Time…………….6hrs. 8mins.

Average Flight Time…………10mins.

Flying Report 26/2/14

We had a really good day on Wednesday getting exactly as the weather forecast said. A good breeze from the S.W. so launches to about 1800′, nice and warm for the time of year and only 3 light showers all day. Best of all, for most of the day, we had brilliant sunshine. It was thermic for a couple of hours with several pilots managing decent flights. We flew from straight after the briefing until light stopped play.

Many thanks to Tony P. for running a really good and busy day. We had all 4 two seaters out and also the K18 and Junior, all were well used. As it was a Wednesday our esteemed C.F.I. turned up at lunchtime and Tony put him straight to work.

At lunch time there were 25 cars in the car park ! A brilliant turnout for a brilliant day.

Total Launches……………41

Total Flight Time…………..7hrs. 7mins.

Longest Flight……………..25mins…. Well done to Paul R. in the K18. Other notable flights were 24mins by Phil Pa. and Nic J. in a K13…. 22mins by Andy S. and Tony P. in this years first outing of the K21. and finally 19mins by Vic A. in a K13 after a very long layoff.

Average Flight Time……..10mins…. First time it has been double figures this year. Here come Spring…… From now on the only way is UP.

Flying Report 19/2/14

Another really good day. The weather was even better than expected with glorious sunshine all morning instead of the broken cloud we were promised. It did cloud over around lunch time for a couple of hours but it did not stop us flying. The sun came out soon after to give us a brilliant end to the day. No rain or even a shower and it really was quite warm until the last hour or so.

A very busy day kept all 3 x K13’s and the K18 in the air all day. The T21 also made several flights for those brave souls who don’t mind getting slightly chilled. It was not as thermic as Sunday but there were several flights of 11 mins. and Humph managed 12 in the K18. A special mention to Pete M. who managed 11mins. 2 up in a K13 from a very middling launch. He found some lift and climbed away a 100ft or so, all that on a check flight after a fair lay off, well done Pete. The wind stayed in the west for most of the day but finally backed to S.S.W. at the end.

The only down side was we had to be on single cable all day, if we had been able to tow out both cables we would have probably have done over 50 launches as we had to stop flying when the canopies finally started misting and there was still a lot to do. At least we were able to operate from outside the clubhouse.

Total Launches…………39.

Longest Flight………….12 mins. Well done Humph.

Total flight time………….5 hr. 2 mins.

Average flight time 7 min.

Flying Report 23/1/13

We took a bit of a chance this week in going for Thursday but it turned out very well. As forecast we had some rain early in the morning but it had stopped by 8-30am and within half an hour we had blue sky and by 10-30 it was nice and sunny although it was a cold wind. After the heavy rain on Tuesday night the field had dried out well and we were able to do a 2 cable tow out which helped with the launch rate.

Apart from a very quick shower during the briefing it was dry all day after the early morning rain. We had a very good day with 16 members on the flying list at 10am and a couple more arriving later. Everyone flew and several had 4 flights. It blew mostly West or W.N.W. for most of the day only going around to N.W. later in the afternoon, so for most of the day we were able to land on 27 and then on 33 for the last few flights.

For most of the morning it was blue sky and sunshine but there was some heavy cloud around lunch time but it soon cleared to give us a very sunny afternoon. There was a little lift about with some extended flights. A brisk 18 -22kt breeze gave us good launches to around 1600′. The lift was often replaced by 4 – 6 kts down just to make life a little more interesting.

Thanks to Nick for standing in for Allan and I think a good day was had by all with no problems.

Total Launches,,,,,,,,,..,,,,,31.

Longest Flight(s)………….13mins. Well done to Tony M. and Phil Pa. (closely followed by some others who shall remain nameless).

Total Flight Time…………..4 hrs. 9 min.

Average flight time…………8min.

A good day and well worth the effort.

See you soon,

Steve P.

Flying Report 9/1/14

The first Doughnut Day of 2014 turned out to be a great success and we were very lucky in being able to use the field. The rain on Wednesday started several hours earlier than forecast and also stopped earlier and so we had several hours of a brisk breeze and no rain. The field improved as the day went on.

By the time we arrived on Thursday morning we had a good look at the field and although there were areas that were soft we also found a good firm area to launch from and also a good place to land. We were able to retrieve alongside the peri-track and so flew all day without any problems or damage to the field. The only drawback was we had to do a single tow out for each launch as we could not drive directly down the field to the launch point. The weather was kind to us with the Westerly wind slightly less than forecast at about 15 – 20 kts for most of the morning and then decreasing during the afternoon, The sun shone all day with no showers or rain although it was a cold wind as the upper wind was slightly from the North.

In the end we flew until we lost the light just using the 3 x K13’s.

Total launches…………….23.

Longest flights…………….11 mins. Well done to Tony M. and Phil Pa.

Average Flight Time……….7 mins. (including one cable break, well done Ken).

Flight Time for Day………..Just under 3 hours.

16 Members on the flying list when we started flying and it was good to see Humphrey and Neil back at the club after their brush with the N.H.S. last year. A really good start to 2014.
