Ben Goes Solo on his 14th Birthday!

Yesterday Ben Edkins was sent on his first solo flight in a glider at Stratford on Avon Gliding Club on his 14th Birthday!

Ben who has been flying with us for some time was put through his paces by senior instructor Barry K, handling every simulated launch failure and situation put to him to prove his readiness.

When the moment finally came after lunch, mum and dad Sharon and Chris were watching along with Ben’s grandparents.

Ben flew an excellent launch for a short flight followed by an equally excellent circuit and landing back at Snitterfield.

Ben is the third generation of Edkins to fly gliders with us, after his father Chris and his grandfather.

As one of our new solo pilots, Ben will be working towards his Bronze C and has ambitions to fly cross country and possibly in competitions when he is 16.

From there, Ben went straight over to Wellesbourne airfield for his first flying lesson in a powered aircraft on the same day. While you can go solo in a glider at 14, you have to wait until you’re 16 to solo in a power plane.

The club’s LS4

Today saw the first day of operating the club’s LS4, 9 pilots flew the glider and it did 11 launches and flew for 209 minutes.

Everyone that flew the LS4 was delighted with the flying characteristics along with the gliders performance and I can see it will become a popular glider.

The minimum requirement’s needed to fly the LS4 are as follows.

Bronze C with a Cross County Endorsement along with 30 hours solo.
Bronze C pilots without the Cross Country Endorsement will be limited to no more than 5 nm from the site and must carry a FR300 flight logger.
A minimum of 15 launches in the Junior, experience on other single seater glass types will count and a conversion flight in the K21 may be required.
At the moment instructors that are authorised to brief pilots for there first flight in the LS4 are the CFI, DCFI, Barry K , Mike C and Andy B.LS4 EMG Launch 1

Peter C goes solo at Stratford on Avon Gliding Club!

Two days and two new solo pilots!

Today, Peter C went solo after patiently waiting for a day with suitable weather. Peter was checked-out by CFI Steve Brown with a series of simulated launch failures and handling exercises before being sent off for the first time on his own in K13 G-CHSM.

Despite the shorter cross-field landing direction, Peter made a great flight and landing then flew his second solo just a few minutes later.

Neil Croxford goes solo at Stratford on Avon Gliding Club

Today Neil Croxford, father of junior member Richard, flew his first solo flight in a glider.

Despite a wet (but thankfully quickly drying) field, the decision was made to fly. After being put through the mill by Allan W, Neil was briefed for solo in K-13 G-CHSM.

neilpreflight Adding slightly to the technical difficulty today was the shorter winch run and cross-field landing direction but Neil took it in his stride and had two successful solo flights.

Well done Neil!
