Phil Pickett

It is with deep sadness that I have to inform you of the death of Phil Pickett.

He, along with his wife and committee member Liz, were involved in a motorcycle accident on Tuesday whilst on holiday in Ibiza. Liz sustained multiple arm fractures during the accident, but Phil died at the scene.phil pickett

Phil was a well respected and popular instructor who for many years enabled our club to operate 7 days a week during the summer by acting as our mid-week duty instructor. He was also our Chief Technical Inspector, and was instrumental in keeping our aircraft in flying condition and carried out much of the work required for annual inspections of the club fleet as well as on some private gliders.

He will be missed on both a personal level and for his day to day contribution to our club.

Tragic accidents are always difficult to handle, but this is especially difficult for Liz being injured herself and the accident happening abroad. Barry K is in contact with her and supporting her from here, but the club will be offering practical support in any way possible.

Our thoughts are with Liz at this very tragic time.

John

Late Summer Bank Holiday

We will be open for flying on Bank Holiday Monday.

Subject to the weather, visitors will be welcome to come along and experience flying in a glider from just £40.

Call 01789 731 095 on the day to check the weather and availability.

Monday 12 August – Friday 16 August 2013

We will be open everyday this coming week. Allan will be on duty every day and the forecast is looking ok.

We should have gentle to medium westerly winds everyday and mostly dry. There is a chance of showers on Monday but they should be light and we may be lucky and not get any.

It should be thermic most days but probably not fantastic (Sorry Derek and John). But it will be warm, dry, flyable and good company.

As always no food Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday but tea and coffee on as usual. The forecast says there is strong chance of Doughnuts just North of Stratford tomorrow morning between 9 and 10am.

We do have a course on all week but Allan will be available to fly with everyone else as well, he does need more practice as he still seems to struggle with this straight and level bit, so come along and give him some help.

See you there, Steve P.

Monday 22nd July – Friday 26th July Opening

The Club will be open each day this week under the supervision of a Senior Club Pilot (SCP).

The SCP will run the field but there can be NO INSTRUCTION of any sort undertaken. That means we cannot take Trial Lessons or undertake check flights or site checks or conduct any ab-initio training etc.

P1 Flying is restricted to pilots holding a Bronze C + Cross Country endorsement  (EASA Licence standard). Pilots must be current on winch launch and the glider type they are flying. No authorisation for cross country flights in club gliders may be given, although this may be obtained if the CFI can be contacted.

If you do not fit the EASA Licence criteria, you will still be able to get airborne but it would need to be with a suitably rated pilot, flying to their privileges, BUT NOT PROVIDING INSTRUCTION. This is a strict requirement and MUST BE COMPLIED WITH in these circumstances.

This weeks SCPs are :

Monday – Geoff G

Tuesday – Nick J

Wednesday – Steve P

Thursday – Chris B

Friday – Daniel B
