Flying Report 11/7/15

Bristol Sid’s forecast for today matched up well with what we experienced in our area, particularly the arrival of the top-cover.

However, tasks were flown, the longest being by Mike C in his LS10 flying Snitterfield South West > Winchcombe > Calvert > Snitterfield South West for a 157.1km triangle at 82.2kph. http://www.bgaladder.co.uk/dscore.asp?FlightID=55215

Geoff B and one of Stratford’s newly cross-country endorsed Bronze C pilots, Phil S converted onto the club’s new LS4 G-DEMG.

We couldn’t get Phil out of it, he flew it a total of 5 times and enjoyed every minute of it.

Flying Report 9/7/15

Today turned out rather blue with few cumulus. Fairly fast climbs were coupled with equally fast and extensive sink later on.

Several pilots planned and launched on a 500km+ task. Snitterfield SW > Cambridge West > Great Malvern > Bedford Bridge > Snitterfield SW.

Mike C in an LS10, Barry & Barry in a Duo and visiting Jack T in an LS8 aborted the task at various stages but Stratford’s junior pilot Daniel Brown in a LAK 19 & Andy B in an LS8 continued round.

Andy came back first having reached all turn points and Daniel Brown struggled along the last leg to complete his first 500km task flight.

Well done to those who tried and those who succeeded!Dan & Jack after the 500km

Flying Report 13/4/14

It turned out rather well today. It was a cold start in the westerly breeze but flat-ish looking cumulus clouds formed into orderly rows and wave was encountered early on. One ASW24 pilot climbed to over 5,000 feet in wave while those who were encountering thermal lift were considerably lower.

Some cross-country flying was attempted with mixed results. Wave influence on the otherwise often abundant thermals made tasks tricky. At least one cross-country pilot had to fire the turbo to get home.

We also entertained many visitors today. Some just enjoying the sunshine and the airfield spectacle and others partaking in trial gliding lessons with us. Visitors came from across the region as well as the nearby village of Wilmcote.
130114Towards the end of the day, we heard one pilot flying from Aston Down on the radio informing his home field that he would be a “little late” home as he was at 10,000ft in wave overhead the Black Mountains.

Putting a K21 Away. With over 40 launches and 24hours logged flying time, we were packing the hangar and de-rigging private aircraft late into the day.

Tuesday 30th April 2013

Here comes summer!

We certainly had a good day today but we did not get the weather we thought we would get. For most of the morning it was cool and cloudy with a lowish cloudbase. The first flight was at 10:30 with cloudbase at 2500′. It did rise during the day to finally get to the expected height but it was a slow job.

None the less we had good lift from early on, easily getting to cloudbase. Everyone flew although it was very late before the last on the list got their airtime. It was good to see 5 privateers out who all had good flights (eventually).

We flew until 5-45 when we saw the best of the day, high clouds and warm sun, ah well better late than never.

So our Doughnuts days are over until September, many thanks to everyone who helped make them so good. Winch drivers, retrieve drivers, manning the launch point in bitterly cold easterlies (grief, we had more than our fair share of those), control and of course Allan (and his little band of helpers). Thanks to you all, like links in a chain, on their own quite small but without you the bike goes nowhere.

Brilliant statistics are……………

Total launches…………..46

Safe landings……………46 (this one is for Steve B’s peace of mind).

Total Flight time………..29hr..42min. Told you it was good !

Longest Flight……………4hr. 12min on task. Well done to Mike C. in his LS8. Loads of other really good flights.

Average Flight Time…….38min. Would have been much longer but Nick seemed to have trouble getting to the top of the Launch.

And finally thanks to everyone for not giving me too much of a hard time when I got it wrong weatherwise.

Have a great summer, safe flying, Steve P.
